SEVENS RUGBY
When you think of sevens rugby, the words exciting, breathtaking and unbelievable come to mind. That's because some of the tries manufactured along the way on the IRB world sevens series are simply out of this world.
Since its inception in 2000, New Zealand has won eight of the nine titles with only Fiji breaking its hot streak in the 2006-07 series. The two nations have a fierce rivalry on the sevens paddock and some of their clashes have gone down as some of the greatest ever. Samoa has also emerged in the last few years as a real force on the circuit, using only local based players such as the 2006 IRB sevens player of the year Uale Mai.
These three nations are the perennial powerhouses in sevens and an almost permanent fixture at semifinals and final time. However, a group of other nations are on their tail. Kenya is emerging as a consistent side and the likes of South Africa, England and France are never too far behind.
The rugby aside, the carnival atmosphere at each tournament is certainly something to behold. Sevens supporters fly from all over the globe to catch the action at the likes of Hong Kong and Wellington and the packed stadiums are always fever pitch.
